SAIGON, South Vietnam, Thursday, Oct. 15 (Reuters)—Nguyen Van Troi was executed by a firing squad today for having plotted to assassinate Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara when Mr. McNamara visited South Vietnam earlier this year.
The 17‐year‐old Troi, leader of a Vietcong terrorist cell, screamed “Down with Americans” and “Long Live Ho Chi Minh” during his last moments of life. Ho Chi Minh is North Vietnam's Communist leader.
It was reported earlier this week that Lieut. Col. Michael Smolen, deputy head of the United States military mission in Venezuela, who was kidnapped in Caracas last Friday, had been held to effect the release of Troi.
After Colonel Smolen was freed Monday he said that at no time had his captors mentioned the possibility of his being killed if the Vietnamese terrorist was killed.
